HYDROCULUS COOLING – ARIZONA OVERVIEW SUSTAINABILITY TARGETS We propose a revolutionary demonstration of cooling that breaks all standard conventions of how both architects and engineers engage with the thermal environment. In the face of climate change, driven in no small part by the cool climate expected indoors, it is time to fundamentally change design conventions. A LafargeHolcim Global award would provide the critical validation of the importance of rethinking cooling, materials, and design integration for sustainable construction. The Hydroculus demonstrates how integrating hygroscopic materials and radiant heat transfer geometries can generate new architectural form while challenging conventional paradigms. The expectation that conditioned space must be physically separated from the outdoors limits “air” as the only medium for “conditioning”. Unlike conventional air condition systems now using 2 to 3 times more energy to meet COVID ventilation requirements, the Hydroculus uses an open architecture of thermal reflection and evaporative manipulation to reduce cooling energy 10-fold while increasing fresh air accessibility and health. The seemingly complex structure is digitally prefabricated, and can be easily adapted to local wood resources. The technical cooling materials are all biocompatible and eliminate both heavy AC components and greenhouse gas depleting refrigerants while using a solar driven evaporated water recovery mechanism to limit water use. Finally the integrated structure and systems can be adapted to a range of warm to hot and arid to semi-arid climates across the globe. PROGRESS - INNOVATION AND TRANSFERABILITY Expanding architectural opportunities and education to solve the cooling crunch The incumbency and standardization of Air Conditioning packages has taken away the agency of architects in relation to space cooling, severely limiting innovation. The Hydroculus demonstration will prove a new trend- setting approach to cooling and integrated design. It can easily be scaled and replicated, and demonstrates the circular economy of wood materials and digital design- for-deconstruction. The first demonstration will take place adjacent to the architecture school at Arizona University, and we will use the pavilion as both technical and teaching tool. By demonstrating the prototype in an architecture school setting, students will be engaged with both experiential learning and hands-on research to increase thermal design capabilities and regain thermal agency. A LafargeHolcim Global prize will directly enable further demonstrations of our revolutionary systems and methods to help break the cycle of unsustainable air conditioning PEOPLE - ETHICAL STANDARDS AND SOCIAL INCLUSION Cooling for people, not giant sealed buildings The current design paradigm for air conditioned buildings has played a major role enabling the spread of the COVID virus. Sealing people indoors creates a competition between efficiently delivering cold air and providing adequate fresh air. The Hydroculus system concept has the ability to leverage passive cooling strategies to synergistically provide fresh air from above (away from occupants breathing zone) to arguably generate a highly level of fresh air that is not only better than highly risky indoor settings, but also providing even more fresh air than in some outdoor settings. With its open porous boundary, the Hydroculus system invites people into a cool area with the strict dichotomy of separating people indoors vs outdoors. It is explicitly accessible. This is critical in the social condition where many low income and often minority groups have less access to cooling. Heat stress is a major environmental justice concern with the vast majority of victims being low income and/or from disadvantaged communities. The Hydroculus combines evaporative cooling with radiant surfaces to activate new accessible cooling modes. A LafargeHolcim Global award would support the demonstration providing equitable cooling within a safe and inclusive outdoor space. PLANET - RESOURCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE New materials and heat transfer techniques for unprecedented cooling performance Cooling and heating are more than half of energy used in buildings, and with the development of the global south it is projected that cooling will surpass heating as the dominant demand by mid-century. Designing new systems that demonstrate alternative cooling solutions is paramount to preventing a spiral of increasing electricity demand, which will only exacerbate the global warming emissions it causes. The dry climate provides evaporative cooling potential we leverage with a new hydrogel material system that completely eliminates the energy intensive air conditioning. We use the same chemical expertise with a solar-driven desiccant water recovery system at the base to recapture water, recognizing water as a limited resource in many arid climates. These novel chemical sorption-desorption systems are integrated with materials designed to manage radiant heat transfer through photonic structures that can direct resources like night sky cooling into the thermal mass integrated into the structural voids, while also mitigating solar heat gain during the day. Thesystemisconstructedoutof renewablewoodmaterial, and using digital fabrication it can be easily disassembled. In addition have identified opportunities to refine the component-based pieces to enable use of smaller wood species common to arid areas. A LafargeHoclim Global Award would enable demonstration of more than 10x improvement in cooling efficiency, a zero- CO2 emission operation, and a 10x reduction in embodied carbon. PROSPERITY - ECONOMIC VIABILITY AND COMPATIBILITY Rapidly deployable and low cost operation The Hydroculus will easily operatewith a small solar array, and thus only a small top-up of the water tanks will be necessary to operate the structure - eliminating the need for costly grid connections. The form is supported by an inexpensive wooden frame custom CNC’d out of wood, which can be easily flat packed and is assembled with standard hardware. There is no cost of facade insulation, glazing or sealing, and only minor pumping and basic controls to operate. This creates a whole new model for what it means to have “conditioned” space.
