The Materials Book

Green Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive: Smart use of everyday materials can be an environmentally friendly solution Sometimes you can get green materials at your local discount store or garden center. Reflective Mylar film—the stuff used in emergency blankets found in first-aid kits—is an extremely light and thin polyester developed by NASA for the exterior surfaces of spacecraft. In the 99¢ Space project—a transformation of a barn that cost less than $1 per square foot—this inexpensive foil was used to create shimmering curtains that double as an insulating layer. Example: Reflective Mylar film used as a curtain, seen in R3 Ranch, Santa Ynez, USA Contributed by: Sarah Graham, agps architecture, USA 352
