The Materials Book

No Need for Cooking: A brick that hardens at room temperature This thin, novel brick draws inspiration from coral, the superhard cement-like material created naturally in the sea. Like coral, bioMason employs natural microorganisms to grow durable cement at room temperature. Sand is mixed into a mold with bacteria, which are fed with a water solution and calcium ions. The bacteria in the bricks creates a cement that requires no baking to harden. 350 Example: bioLITH by bioMason Contributed by: David Benjamin (The Living), USA
