The Materials Book

A Powerful Facade: Ultra-thin solar panels can heat water and generate electricity By combining photovoltaic cells and water-bearing capillaries, this panel produces electricity and heat from sunlight. Both technologies have been successfully used before, on their own and in combination. What distinguishes these panels is their svelte profile—they’re just 2.2 millimeters thick—and minimal weight. They can be used in renovations or new construction, creating a power-generating curtain layer in front of a building’s facade.
