The Materials Book

Minimize the Stuff You Use: Vaulted concrete slabs help reduce overuse of materials Despite its central role in contemporary building, concrete is frequently applied inefficiently —we use more than is necessary to ensure structural integrity, particularly to span space, for instance in floors. One option would be these structurally optimized concrete floors made with recyclable 3-D-printed molds. The thin, rib-stiffened shell floors can reduce concrete consumption by up to 70 percent and allow use of lower-strength materials that require less carbon to make.
